AI Mode is the separate tab on the Google results page and in the Google app. It is not the AI Overview, the short answer that can appear above normal results. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary. If you already checked Overviews, check AI Mode on its own. The Overview check is written up for dental clinics: how to check if Google AI Overviews names your dental clinic.
How people ask about a gym
Someone in exactly that spot posted on r/dubai in March 2026. They named their area, the facilities they wanted, and the metro. They also noticed what one gym would not tell them: it refused to share its price list before a visit. In Abu Dhabi, someone asked r/abudhabi for a gym around Muroor.
Neither post is about AI. They show the shape of the question: an area, a facility, and how to get there. Ask AI Mode the same way.
Write the questions
Leave your gym's name out. The check is whether AI Mode names you to someone who has never heard of you.
Name the area in every question, and the city. Keep the facility wording the same in both cities and change only the area. These are wording to adapt, not answers.
Dubai: "gym with a sauna in DMCC, Dubai"
Abu Dhabi: "gym with a sauna on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi"
Dubai: "women-only gym in Al Barsha, Dubai"
Abu Dhabi: "women-only gym in Muroor, Abu Dhabi"
Dubai: "24-hour gym in Al Nahda, Dubai"
Abu Dhabi: "24-hour gym in Al Khalidiyah, Abu Dhabi"
Swap in the areas you actually serve and the facilities you actually have. If you have one gym in one city, run the other city's questions once as well. It shows you an answer that was never going to include you, which makes your own answer easier to read.
Start a new thread for each question
AI Mode keeps a conversation going. Google's help page describes follow-ups and AI Mode history, and Google has said AI Mode can use your previous conversations and places you searched for or tapped on in Search and Maps. Google first offered this to US users in Search Labs, starting with dining, and its help page now says personalization needs history and personalized recommendations turned on. We have not confirmed how it works in the UAE.
You are not a neutral tester. You have probably searched for your own gym many times. So open a new AI Mode thread for every question, and write down whether you were signed in, whether Search history was on, the device, and the date. Keep those the same next time.
Write down the answer
AI Mode breaks a question into smaller parts and runs many searches at once on your behalf. That is why the links under an answer can include pages you would not have expected. The same post says that when Google does not have high confidence, you will see a set of web results instead of an AI answer. "Links only" is a result. Write it down.
For each question, keep:
AI answer: yes / links only My gym named: yes / absent Gyms named instead, exactly as written, in order: Links shown (my site / Maps or Business Profile / ClassPass or another class-booking or membership page / review site / best-of list / Reddit / other gym's site): Facts it gave about my gym, and whether they are right:
The last line matters. Being named with the wrong hours, or without the women-only section you have, is a different problem from not being named.
Ask one follow-up
A member rarely stops at one question. After the first answer, ask what they would ask next, in the same thread. For the sauna question, that might be "Which of these has a women-only section?" For the 24-hour question, "Which of these has parking?" Other follow-ups a member might ask: "Which of these shows its membership price online?", "Which has women-only hours in the evening?", or "Which runs group classes?"
Write down whether the list changed, and whether your gym came in or dropped out. This is what the Overview check can't show you: in AI Mode, one conversation can change which gyms are named. Google doesn't say how the list is narrowed, so record what changed rather than guessing why.
Compare with the gyms that were named
For each gym named instead of yours, open its website and its Google Maps listing. Do they state the thing that was asked: the hours, the area, the sauna, the women-only section? Then open yours and look for the same facts in the same places.
Then open the links AI Mode showed. If a best-of list or a directory was linked, is your gym on it, and is the information there current? If a class-booking or membership page was linked, check that your gym's listing there is live and matches your own site.
Search "best gym in Dubai" and "best gym in Abu Dhabi" yourself and note whose pages come first. If they are best-of lists and chain sites, check whether your gym appears on any of them.
Google's guidance for AI Mode is the same as for Search: if your pages are indexed and can show with a snippet, there is nothing extra to add. The same page tells owners to keep Business Profile information up to date.
Run the same AI Mode questions on another day
Run the same questions on a different day, each in a new thread, under the same conditions. Put the notes side by side and compare the gyms named and the links shown, not a score. In an r/localseo thread from July 2026 (not a UAE thread), one reply warned that asking again can give a totally different answer. That is why one run is not enough.
If you change a page or a listing between runs, note what and when. A later mention does not prove the change caused it, and nothing here promises that AI Mode will name your gym.
Search Console's generative AI report counts links to your site from AI Overviews and AI Mode together. The dental check above explains how to read it. It does not show whether your gym's name was said.
This check covers AI Mode in English only. Arabic AI Mode started rolling out on 8 October 2025 and may answer differently. The same naming check for other assistants: ChatGPT and restaurants and Gemini and cafes.
Whereon runs this check for one gym location and turns the answers into a plan. The owner makes the changes. The first look is the same questions for one city, asked twice, a few days apart.
